I’ve always felt calmer next to the sea, even before I understood why.
When I moved to the UK, life wasn’t easy. New country, no friends, stressful job, and people around me I didn’t trust. I felt constantly on edge, drained, and a bit lost.
I was living in a coastal town — the kind with loud arcades, bright lights, and those strange casinos. Not exactly peaceful. But right next to all that chaos… there was the sea. After work, I used to go for a walk by the water. It didn’t matter it was autumn and already getting colder then. Somehow, being there helped me cope with everything I was carrying inside.
After I met Dovile we started to do it together. I remember going for walks with Dovile. Even in winter, we’d walk along the pier and the beach, talking about life. At the time, we didn’t think much of it. But looking back, the sea was doing something for us.
The sound of the waves.
The smell of the air.
That open, quiet space.
It was calming us in a way we didn’t even understand.
There’s something about the sea that helps calm your mind and slow everything down. You don’t have to do much. Just sit, listen to the waves, feel the wind on your skin. After a while, your body starts to relax on its own. Your mind gets quieter too. Walking by the sea is a simple way to reduce stress and clear your mind. No pressure, no rush. Just step after step, with the sound of waves in the background. It gives your brain a break from overthinking. The air near the sea feels cleaner. Breathing becomes easier, deeper. Even if you’re stressed or anxious, you might notice your chest loosens a bit after some time there.>
The biggest change is usually your mental state — you feel calmer, lighter, and less overwhelmed. The sound of waves, the open space, the rhythm of water — it grounds you. It pulls you out of your head and back into the present moment. You don’t need a full holiday. Even a short visit can reset your mood. The sea doesn’t fix everything. But it gives you space to breathe again. And sometimes, that’s enough.
